Distribution - China, Hubei (Hupeh) province.
Description – A medium sized evergreen species. This is another species which seems a little confusing currently. I have been happy for quite a few years with plants which seem to fit William Stearns description. This states that simple leaves are produced except on flowering stems. Plants I have from Chen Yi, Desirable Plants, Cotswold Garden Flowers and Edrom Nurseries all seem to be the species as described.
However, recently I have purchased two cultivars from Koen Van Poucke, derived from collections by Darrell Probst where basal leaves are frequently not simple. The leaves are also more pointed and substantial. They also are extremely heavily felted underneath with off-white hairs. Perhaps the situation will eventually become clearer. All of these plants have bicoloured flowers, but the rhizomes differ in that the plants I knew under this name until recently, all had long thin searching type roots. The new introductions seem to have shorter more clump forming rhihomes.

The above is a plant given to us by the late David Barker as a form of E. wushanense Nova, which we now think is a 'true' E. zushanense.
